- Data for maximum pit depths obtained from intelligent pigging runs for several older operational water injection pipelines (WIPs) has been used extensively for prediction of likely future pipe wall penetration. Often such data do not fit extreme value distributions very well. Also, they provide no insight about the pitting corrosion mechanisms involved. A more satisfactory approach is outlined in which the development of extreme values of pit depth with increased exposure time is related to the trends in pit depth data as shown on standard Gumbel EV plots. It is shown that the uncertainty in the value of the deepest pit depths at any point in time is related to the corrosion phase at that time, and thus the underlying physical-chemical processes at that time. This presents a more rational approach to extrapolation of Gumbel EV data, such as for water injection pipelines.
